Utica Shale is a rock layer located a few thousand feet below Marcellus shale. Utica shale is thicker than Marcellus, and also more geographically extensive - located in Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee, West Virginia, and in portions of Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, and parts of Ontario, Canada.
